What should I do right now, before the technician arrives?
Turn the system off at the thermostat. A unit that's icing up, tripping breakers, or running without cooling can do more damage to itself the longer it runs. Then close the blinds on the sunny side of the house, get ceiling fans moving, and stay low in the house where it's coolest. If you saw ice on the copper lines outside or at the indoor unit, shutting it down now means it'll be thawed enough to diagnose when we get there.
What counts as a real AC emergency?
Some problems can wait until morning, and we'll tell you honestly when that's the case. These can't: no cooling at all during a heat advisory, a breaker that keeps tripping when the AC kicks on, ice on the refrigerant lines, water coming through a ceiling from the attic unit, or any burning smell from the equipment. And if anyone in your home is elderly, an infant, or managing a health condition, a house with no cooling in a Dallas summer is an emergency, full stop.
