First, the answer to the question you're actually asking
You don't have to replace your air conditioner. If your system runs R-410A and works fine, nothing in the new rules touches it. It stays legal to run, legal to repair, and serviceable for the rest of its life. Anyone using the refrigerant change to pressure you into a replacement you didn't need is selling, not advising.
So what actually changed?
Under the federal AIM Act, the EPA is phasing down the older generation of refrigerants. Since January 1, 2025, manufacturers can no longer build new residential split systems that use R-410A, and a complete new system installed from January 1, 2026 on must use a refrigerant under the new limit. In practice that means new ducted systems in Dallas now come with R-454B, and most ductless mini-splits use R-32. This is the same kind of transition the industry already went through when R-22 was phased out. Existing equipment rode that one out for years, and this works the same way.
What does it mean when I need a repair?
A normal repair stays a normal repair. Capacitors, motors, boards, drain problems, none of that is affected by refrigerant rules. Even most refrigerant-side repairs are fine: a failed part on an R-410A system can be replaced with a compatible R-410A part. The line you should know about is this one: replacing both the outdoor unit and the indoor coil together generally counts as installing a new system, and a new system in 2026 must use the new refrigerant. That's why a major failure on an older R-410A system usually calls for a repair-or-replace conversation instead of an automatic like-for-like swap.
The part that will cost you money if you ignore it
R-410A itself is getting expensive. Production is winding down, supply is tightening, and industry pricing in 2026 commonly runs $80 to $150 per pound installed, with a typical recharge needing several pounds. If your system needs a top-off every summer, that's a leak, and at today's refrigerant prices, fixing the leak properly has never penciled out better against topping it off for another season.
Can I convert my system to the new refrigerant?
No. R-410A equipment isn't designed or safety-certified for R-454B or R-32, and there's no legitimate retrofit. If a contractor offers to convert your existing system, get a different contractor.
When does replacement genuinely make sense?
Three situations. Your system is 12 to 15 years old or more and facing a major repair. It's developed a refrigerant leak that would cost serious money to chase in an aging coil. Or it's limping and you'd rather choose your replacement on your schedule than have an August failure choose it for you. If your system is under 10 years old and healthy, do nothing but maintain it. If it's older and leak-free, run it and start a replacement fund instead of panicking.
